Fireworks and Eye Safety: Protecting Your Vision This Fourth of July
The Fourth of July is a time for fun, fireworks, and family gatherings—but it’s also one of the most dangerous holidays for eye injuries. Each year, thousands of people end up in emergency rooms with fireworks-related injuries, and nearly 15% of those involve the eyes, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Here’s how to protect your eyes this holiday:
Leave Fireworks to the Pros
Consumer fireworks can be unpredictable and dangerous, even when handled with care. Sparklers, for example, burn at over 1,200°F and can cause serious harm. The Consumer Product Safety Commission strongly recommends enjoying public fireworks shows from a safe distance instead of lighting your own.
Use Protective Eyewear
If you choose to use legal fireworks, wear protective, impact-resistant eyewear. Standard sunglasses won’t do the job—opt for safety goggles that meet ANSI Z87.1 standards. Make sure bystanders—especially children—are also wearing eye protection and are standing far away.
Watch Out for Debris and Smoke
Even if you’re not lighting fireworks yourself, being near them exposes you to flying debris and smoke that can irritate or damage your eyes. Stand back at least 500 feet from lit fireworks, and avoid rubbing your eyes if ash or particles get in.
Know What to Do in Case of an Eye Injury
Never try to remove debris or rinse your eye after an injury—this can cause more damage. Instead, place a shield (like the bottom of a paper cup) over the eye and seek emergency medical care immediately.
At Thomas Eye Care, we want all our patients to enjoy a fun, safe Fourth of July. Taking a few extra precautions can help protect your eyes and your vision. If you experience any irritation or injury during the holiday, don’t wait—contact our office for a follow-up appointment.
